The resonance of a specter, 2025 - ongoing
There’s a mine that has been abandoned since the early colonial explorations in the north of Mexico during the XVII century. It is located in a small town know today as Dinamita, in the mexican state of Durango. It was first exploited by the spaniards, looking for gold or any valuable minerals since it’s particularly red; they found nothing and left it open until today. 300 years later, the french-unitedstatian company DuPont opened an explosives facility right infront of it. The explosive they’ve been producing for 100 years now have been used in the opening of mines, the war effort of the U.S. during WWII, the war on drugs in Mexico since the cartel sicarios stole material from it, among other events. This video pice shows how the mine would talk to tell a story by itself. Wondering how the mine would speak, the piece suggests that it would do so by releasing a small part of its immense rock body with robotic arms to smash itself with tiny rocks, so that we can hear its language with contact microphones that move the sound through bone conductant headphones; it’s solid rocky body echoeing our bones.
